17.2.3 International collaboration data gathering for SDG

Bukhara State University (BSU) actively participates in international sustainability assessment and reporting initiatives, contributing to the collection, evaluation and exchange of institutional data relevant to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A central component of this engagement is the university's participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, an international sustainability assessment framework that evaluates universities using indicators covering infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water conservation, transportation, and education and research.

In addition to participating in this international assessment, Bukhara State University serves as the UI GreenMetric National Coordinator for Uzbekistan, supporting the involvement of Uzbek higher education institutions in international sustainability reporting and performance evaluation.

During 2025, the university strengthened its international engagement through cooperation with UI GreenMetric, Abu Dhabi University, Université Côte d’Azur and National Chi Nan University, as well as participation in international environmental research and sustainability forums.

These activities demonstrate BSU's involvement in international sustainability measurement, institutional benchmarking, methodological exchange and the development of partnerships that may support future collaborative environmental data collection.

1. Participation in International Sustainability Data Collection and Assessment Through UI GreenMetric

Bukhara State University's participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings provides the clearest evidence of its involvement in internationally coordinated sustainability data gathering and measurement.

UI GreenMetric evaluates universities through a common framework comprising six major sustainability categories:

  1. Setting and Infrastructure.
  2. Energy and Climate Change.
  3. Waste Management.
  4. Water Resources.
  5. Transportation.
  6. Education and Research.

These categories measure aspects of institutional sustainability relevant to several SDGs, particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Through participation in the assessment, BSU contributes institutional sustainability information to an international benchmarking system that enables universities to evaluate their environmental performance against common indicators.

In 2025, the assessment involved 1,745 universities from 105 countries, providing a substantial international framework for comparative sustainability measurement.

Bukhara State University's participation demonstrates its engagement in internationally standardised environmental performance assessment and the exchange of sustainability information across higher education institutions.

2. Bukhara State University's Measured Sustainability Performance in 2025

The university's participation in the 2025 UI GreenMetric assessment resulted in a published institutional sustainability score of 7,237.5 points, placing BSU 401st globally and 5th among participating universities in Uzbekistan.

The category-level results provide measurable information about the university's sustainability performance across multiple environmental and institutional dimensions.

The assessment framework supports the comparison of university sustainability practices and helps institutions identify areas requiring further attention.

For BSU, participation in this international measurement system provides an opportunity to evaluate environmental performance, monitor progress over successive reporting periods and align institutional sustainability planning with internationally recognised indicators.

These data are relevant to the SDGs, although UI GreenMetric category scores should not be treated as direct measurements of official UN SDG indicators.

3. Coordinating Uzbekistan's Participation in International Sustainability Measurement

Beyond reporting its own sustainability performance, Bukhara State University plays a wider coordinating role through its designation as UI GreenMetric National Coordinator for Uzbekistan.

In this capacity, BSU supports engagement between Uzbek higher education institutions and the international UI GreenMetric network.

According to the university's 2025 announcement, 79 higher education institutions from Uzbekistan participated in the assessment, with 38 institutions placed among the global top 1,000.

This national participation provides a basis for comparing sustainability performance across institutions using a shared international assessment framework.

During the First International Sustainability Leaders Meeting, hosted by Abu Dhabi University in the United Arab Emirates, BSU representatives Ziyodulla Nurov, Head of the university's relevant institutional department, and Baxtiyor Adizov, Head of the Rector's Executive Office, met with UI GreenMetric representatives.

The discussions addressed international approaches to sustainability, climate change initiatives and improving the participation and performance of Uzbekistan's higher education institutions within the UI GreenMetric framework.

Through these activities, BSU contributed to international knowledge exchange concerning sustainability assessment and the development of institutional reporting practices.

Its national coordination role is particularly relevant to the international measurement component of this indicator because it connects multiple Uzbek institutions with a common global sustainability assessment system.

4. International Cooperation with Abu Dhabi University on Sustainability Assessment

Bukhara State University has strengthened its international cooperation with Abu Dhabi University, which also holds a national coordination role within the UI GreenMetric network.

During an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, BSU Rector Professor Obidjon Khamidov met with Abu Dhabi University Rector Professor Ghassan Aouad.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the partner institution's activities and discuss the development of bilateral cooperation.

Both universities participate in the UI GreenMetric international sustainability network and have been involved in organising activities within that framework.

This relationship provides an institutional basis for exchanging experience in sustainability assessment, environmental management and international reporting.

Cooperation between universities with national coordination responsibilities is relevant to strengthening the consistency and accessibility of international sustainability benchmarking.

While the supplied announcement does not document a separate bilateral data collection project, the relationship supports professional exchange between institutions involved in internationally coordinated sustainability measurement.

5. International Exchange of Sustainability Reporting Practices in Taiwan

From 4 to 6 December 2025, BSU Rector Professor Obidjon Khamidov participated in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025 Results and Award Ceremony, hosted by National Chi Nan University in Taiwan.

During an official conference session, the rector presented Uzbekistan's experience in expanding university participation in the UI GreenMetric network and integrating sustainable development principles into higher education.

It also supports SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth through entrepreneurship education and SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by encouraging innovation and startup development.

Although the announcement primarily identifies university students as participants, the initiative illustrates BSU's engagement with private-sector expertise in delivering applied entrepreneurship education.

Its classification as wider-community outreach would be strengthened by evidence that external young people, local entrepreneurs or other non-enrolled participants were also able to attend.

6. Community Engagement and Educational Outreach Supporting Women in Agriculture

Bukhara State University participates in community initiatives supporting women involved in agricultural employment and promoting recognition of their social and economic contributions.

During October 2025, representatives of the university's Women's Advisory Council and Trade Union Committee organised educational and awareness-raising meetings with women working during the cotton harvesting season.

The activities took place at the Norov Aziz and Farovon Mironshoh farms in Siyozpoyon Mahalla, Kogon District.

University representatives engaged with women working in the agricultural sector through discussions and community outreach activities.

The meetings aimed to recognise women's contributions to agricultural work, encourage social participation and promote respect for women's labour.

Participants who had demonstrated commitment to their work were recognised with commemorative gifts.

The activities formed part of broader regional efforts in 2025 to support women's employment, reduce poverty and encourage women's participation in economic life.

The initiative is relevant to SDG 5 – Gender Equality, particularly the recognition of women's contributions to economic and community development.

It also relates to SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, through its focus on women's participation and social recognition.

From an educational outreach perspective, the activity demonstrates the university's involvement in community awareness-raising and engagement with women outside the academic environment.

However, the announcement does not describe a structured training curriculum or specific learning outcomes. Therefore, this activity is best presented as supplementary evidence of community engagement and awareness-raising rather than a principal example of dedicated educational outreach.
