BUKHARA AT THE HEART OF INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARLY DIALOGUE: YUSUF QARABAGHI’S LEGACY BRINGS TOGETHER RESEARCHERS FROM UZBEKISTAN AND AZERBAIJAN

On 24 October 2026, the Faculty of History at Bukhara State University hosted an international academic seminar entitled “The Scholarly Legacy of Yusuf Qarabaghi: A Dialogue of Philosophy, Science and Cultures.”

Reflecting the enduring friendship, shared historical roots and longstanding intellectual and educational cooperation between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan, the distinguished gathering brought together prominent scholars, Orientalists, historians, philosophers, religious scholars, university faculty members and representatives of the academic communities of the two brotherly nations.

The international seminar was attended by Professor Obidjon Khamidov, Rector of Bukhara State University and Doctor of Economic Sciences; Professor Komiljon Rakhimov, Director of the Abu Rayhan Beruni Institute of Oriental Studies and Doctor of Historical Sciences; Professor Mahmudkhoja Nuriddinov, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences and a distinguished Orientalist and specialist in historical source studies; Professor Halim Torayev, Doctor of Historical Sciences at BukhSU’s Department of Archaeology and History of Bukhara; and Professor Shodmon Khayitov, Doctor of Historical Sciences at the same department, alongside other scholars.

The international academic significance of the event was further enhanced by the participation of Professor Mahira Huseynova, Vice-Rector for International Relations at Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University; Professor Gabil Aliyev, a historian at Baku State University; Farahila Fazil Babayeva-Shukurova, a political scientist in the Department of International Relations and Geopolitics at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences; and Nigar Mustafayev, a representative of the same institute.

The academic and educational gathering was also attended by Azizkhoja Domla Inoyatov, Imam-Khatib of the Chor Bakr Congregational Mosque in the Bukhara region, and Jobir Elov, Rector of the Mir Arab Higher Madrasa. Their participation highlighted the close relationship between scholarship, religious and educational thought, and the region’s rich historical and spiritual heritage.

One of the seminar’s particularly noteworthy features was the participation of Professor Mahmudkhoja Nuriddinov, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, a distinguished scholar whose research has focused directly on the life and philosophical legacy of Yusuf Qarabaghi.

In 1981, Professor Nuriddinov defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation entitled “The Life and Philosophical Views of Yusuf Qarabaghi.” In 1991, he published the monograph “Yusuf Qarabaghi and Socio-Philosophical Thought in Central Asia during the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries.”

His decades of research in the history of philosophy, Oriental studies, historical source studies and Islamic studies have made a significant contribution to understanding the intellectual history of the East. His scholarly work devoted specifically to Yusuf Qarabaghi’s legacy further underscored the relevance and importance of the seminar’s central theme.

Throughout the academic gathering, participants engaged in extensive discussions of the rich intellectual heritage of Yusuf Qarabaghi, one of the leading figures in Eastern philosophical thought; his contributions to philosophy, logic and the advancement of science; his historical and philosophical perspectives; and the continuing relevance of his writings to contemporary scholarship.

Particular attention was given to the shared historical roots, cultural values and scholarly traditions that have connected the peoples of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan for centuries, as well as the importance of conducting in-depth research into the intellectual heritage of great scholars and thinkers.

The discussions also explored Yusuf Qarabaghi’s place in the development of Eastern philosophy, the application of contemporary research approaches to the study of his ideas, and the importance of preserving and transmitting scholarly findings to future generations.

Participants additionally exchanged views on advancing international research cooperation to a new level, examining historical and philosophical sources through modern scholarly methodologies, strengthening academic ties between researchers from both countries, and expanding opportunities for joint research initiatives.
