A prestigious international scientific and theoretical conference titled “Integrating Cultural Diversity and Environmental Sustainability in the 21st Century” — one of the most pressing issues of our time — was held at Bukhara State University. The forum brought together leading scholars, UNESCO experts, and researchers from more than ten countries, becoming an important strategic step toward ensuring harmony between science and nature.
At the opening ceremony, the Rector of the university, Professor Obidjon Khamidov, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the critical importance of preserving national values and restoring ecological balance in the context of globalization and climate change:
“The 21st century requires humanity not only to achieve technological progress, but also to restore the organic connection between our spiritual heritage and the natural environment. Cultural diversity is the intellectual wealth of society, while environmental sustainability is the guarantee of our survival. Without integrating these two concepts, it is impossible to envision a sustainable future. Holding such discussions in Bukhara — an ancient center of knowledge — carries both symbolic and strategic significance.”
The conference was attended by representatives of leading universities of Turkey, including Vice-Rector of Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University, Professor Idris Nebi Uysal, and Vice-Rector of Ahi Evran University, Professor Musa Ozatalar, who highlighted new prospects for scientific cooperation between Uzbekistan and Turkey.
During the plenary session, distinguished representatives of global academia delivered presentations, including UNESCO experts Harriet Deacon (UK) and Benedetta Ubertazzi (Italy), translator and writer Jonas Elbousty from Yale University, Professor Alan Reid Libert (Australia/Azerbaijan), Professor Azlina Abdul Aziz from National University of Malaysia, Professor Haryanto (Indonesia), Handoko from Andalas University, Professor Dogan Nadi Leblebici from Hacettepe University, Professor Jaber Kamali from Ibn Haldun University, film director Cenk Demirkiran (Turkey), and Professor Ali Janlar.
Over the course of two days, participants analyzed issues related to protecting cultural heritage from environmental threats, the role of national values in achieving sustainable development goals, and the advancement of intercultural dialogue in the digital age. At the conclusion of the forum, it is planned to develop a special package of recommendations by international experts aimed at addressing global challenges.
