Information about the history, academic programmes, research activities and international cooperation of the Department
Associate Professor, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Philological Sciences
The training of teachers of Russian language and literature at Bukhara State University (formerly Bukhara State Pedagogical Institute) began in 1935. In 1945, the Department of Russian Language and Literature began operating within the Faculty of History and Philology. In the same year, a unified Department of Russian Language and Literature was established.
In 1949, the Department was divided into two separate departments: the Department of Russian Language and the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature.
In 1967, as a result of reorganisation, the Department of Russian Language was divided into three departments:
In 1999, following a reduction in student enrolment and consequently in teaching hours, the Departments of Russian Linguistics and World (Russian and Foreign) Literature were merged. Since then, it has been known as the Department of Russian Philology. In 2007, the Interfaculty Department of Russian Language was incorporated into it.

They made significant contributions to strengthening the Department's academic and pedagogical potential and developing its material and technical resources.
Bachelor's programme. Currently, 436 students are enrolled in this programme.

Master's programme. Currently, 8 master's students are enrolled.
Master's programme. Currently, 13 master's students are enrolled.
In recent years, members of the Department have successfully defended dissertations and published monographs, textbooks, teaching manuals and research articles.
The Department organised the International Forum “Turkology and Russian Studies” (2025), dedicated to the 95th anniversary of Bukhara State University, two international conferences in 2021 and 2023, and eight inter-university scientific and practical conferences between 2008 and 2021 dedicated to the works of L.N. Tolstoy, A.P. Chekhov, M.A. Bulgakov, M.I. Tsvetaeva and M.Yu. Lermontov.
The Joint Virtual Linguoecological Laboratory (NArFU–BukhSU) operates within the Department's research centre.
