Life Below Water

Bukhara State University (BSU) promotes the protection and sustainable use of aquatic ecosystems through environmental education, applied research, student engagement and collaboration with community organisations.

In 2025, the university's activities addressed freshwater conservation, sustainable aquaculture, water-quality assessment and responsible natural-resource management. These initiatives connected academic knowledge with practical environmental challenges in Bukhara Region, where efficient water use and the protection of freshwater resources are particularly important.

The university's educational approach extends beyond traditional classroom instruction by incorporating field investigations, community awareness campaigns and cooperation with agricultural enterprises. These activities contribute to the development of scientific skills and environmental responsibility among students and local communities.

14.2.1 Freshwater ecosystems (community outreach)

In 2025, Bukhara State University supported freshwater conservation education through the “Life in a Drop” (“Tomchisida hayot”) video competition, organised in cooperation with the Centre for the Development of Nature and Human Capital.

The initiative targeted children aged 10–16 and encouraged them to develop original educational videos demonstrating practical approaches to water conservation. Participants were invited to communicate the importance of responsible freshwater consumption through accessible and creative digital content.

The competition established a platform for engaging school-age audiences in environmental awareness and encouraged young people to become advocates for sustainable water use.

By connecting university-supported environmental education with schoolchildren and their communities, the initiative contributed to freshwater stewardship, public awareness and progress towards SDG 14 and SDG 6.

Bukhara State University researchers also contributed to knowledge exchange on sustainable water management through a Young Farmers Forum organised in Kogon District in cooperation with the Council of Young Farmers of Uzbekistan and the regional administration.

Professor U. Jo‘rayev and Associate Professor U. Saksonov delivered presentations addressing water-saving agricultural technologies, climate adaptation and modern vegetable cultivation.

The forum provided an opportunity to share research-based approaches with young farmers and encouraged the adoption of more efficient water-management practices.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate the university's contribution to environmental education and the dissemination of practical knowledge on freshwater conservation.

14.2.2 Sustainable fisheries (community outreach)

The Department of Biology at Bukhara State University operates the “Young Ichthyologists” Club to strengthen students' understanding of fish biology, aquatic biodiversity and sustainable fisheries.

The club integrates theoretical instruction with laboratory research, field observations and practical scientific activities. Participants develop skills in fish identification, biological classification, morphological and anatomical analysis, and the investigation of aquatic habitats.

Through these activities, the university encourages future specialists to understand the ecological functions of fish populations and the importance of maintaining healthy freshwater ecosystems.

On October 31, 2025, L.F. Karimova, a lecturer in the Department of Biology, organised an off-campus practical training session for students of group 2-1 SBA-23 at Buxoro Baliq LLC.

The training was conducted within the subjects “Ichthyological Research Methods” and “Organisation of Fish Farming Enterprises”.

Students investigated the hydrobiological characteristics of aquaculture ponds and collected water samples for environmental assessment. Practical observations included water and air temperature, pH and nutrient composition.

These activities provided direct experience in aquatic environmental assessment and demonstrated the relationship between water quality, fish production and sustainable aquaculture management.

The university and the enterprise also agreed to undertake seasonal observations, creating an opportunity for continued educational and scientific cooperation.

This combination of academic training and industry engagement supports the development of professional competencies relevant to responsible fisheries and freshwater ecosystem protection.

14.3 Supporting aquatic ecosystems through action

Bukhara State University integrates environmental sustainability into research activities, student initiatives and institutional cooperation.

Its environmental programmes address resource efficiency, biodiversity awareness, sustainable agriculture and the responsible management of natural resources.

Although several university activities focus on broader environmental protection rather than aquatic ecosystems specifically, they provide complementary educational and institutional support for freshwater conservation.

The university's strongest directly relevant activities include practical water-quality investigations, aquaculture education and research cooperation concerning water-analysis technologies.

14.3.1 Conservation and sustainable utilisation of aquatic ecosystems (events)

Bukhara State University, together with Saint Petersburg State University of Economics, organised the second international scientific-practical conference entitled “Green Economy: Problems of Ecology and the Use of Natural Resources in a Multipolar Economy”.

The conference brought together researchers, experts and young scientists to discuss environmental challenges, sustainable economic development and efficient natural-resource utilisation.

The event supported interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and provided an academic setting for discussing approaches to environmental sustainability.

The university also promoted environmental participation through initiatives such as the Eco Marathon and educational activities involving the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Agrobiotechnology.

The 12th Eco Marathon programme offered interactive environmental assignments, scientific-practical training and opportunities for ecological learning. The announced programme provided places for up to 150 participants.

These activities encourage ecological literacy and responsible behaviour among students. Their relevance to aquatic conservation is primarily educational unless specific activities addressing freshwater habitats are documented.

14.3.2 Food from aquatic ecosystems (policies)

Bukhara State University has adopted an institutional Sustainable Food Procurement Policy as part of its broader “Green Campus and Sustainable Development Strategy (2021–2025)”.
The policy explicitly includes a section on food sourced from aquatic ecosystems, ensuring that all fish and seafood provided in campus dining facilities, student cafeterias, and university-hosted events are sustainably harvested.

This policy is aligned with the principles of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life Below Water, promoting responsible consumption and protection of marine and freshwater ecosystems.

To ensure the implementation of the instructions of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mirziyoyev, at a conference call on “Fishery development”. In accordance with the agreement signed between the farm of Temir Tolib Omad LLC in the Vobkent region and scientists from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Agronomy and Biotechnology of Bukhara State University, intensive fish farming activities were carried out to prepare artificial reservoirs for seasonal fishing.

14.3.3 Maintain ecosystems and their biodiversity

Bukhara State University promotes biodiversity awareness through biological education, student research and environmental initiatives.

The Young Ichthyologists Club provides an important educational mechanism for introducing students to fish diversity, habitat adaptation and ecological relationships within freshwater environments.

Through species identification and biological investigations, students acquire knowledge relevant to biodiversity monitoring and the sustainable management of aquatic resources.

The university also participates in the national “Yashil Makon” initiative, including the establishment of an Eco-Garden on its experimental farm territory in cooperation with the Bukhara Regional Prosecutor's Office.

Faculty members from the Departments of Agronomy and Soil Science and Biology contribute to this greening initiative.

These activities support wider environmental stewardship and terrestrial biodiversity conservation. Their specific contribution to aquatic habitat restoration requires separate evidence.

The university's participation in the “Train to the Aral Sea” environmental campaign further demonstrates student engagement with regional environmental challenges.

A delegation of 50 Eco Club student members, accompanied by university representatives and led by First Vice-Rector Akmal Nazarov, departed for Karakalpakstan as part of the initiative.

The campaign provides a basis for environmental awareness concerning the Aral Sea region and the importance of responsible water-resource management.

14.3.4 Technologies towards aquatic ecosystem damage prevention (direct work)

In 2025, discussions involving representatives associated with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) explored opportunities to strengthen Bukhara State University's scientific and technical capabilities.

Proposed cooperation included laboratory equipment for soil and water analysis, the establishment of an agropolis and the involvement of Japanese specialists in academic and research activities.

Access to improved analytical equipment could strengthen the university's capacity to investigate water quality, identify environmental risks and support evidence-based natural-resource management.

These discussions represent prospective technical cooperation; acquisition or operational use of the equipment requires separate confirmation.

Bukhara State University students have also developed technology-oriented proposals addressing water scarcity and sustainable agricultural production.

The “MyShroom” project, developed by student Nurmuhammad Merajov and his team, proposes an autonomous agricultural monitoring system using artificial intelligence, Internet of Things technologies, soil-moisture sensors and automated irrigation control.

The project aims to reduce irrigation water consumption by up to 40%, subject to practical validation.

Although the initiative is primarily agricultural, its proposed water-efficiency functions are relevant to reducing pressure on freshwater resources.

14.4 Water-sensitive waste disposal

Bukhara State University recognises the importance of preventing pollution associated with solid waste, wastewater and inefficient resource use.

Its environmental activities include student clean-up initiatives, recycling-oriented innovation projects and scientific cooperation discussions concerning waste-management technologies.

These activities contribute to environmental awareness and the development of technical solutions that may reduce pollution pressures on aquatic ecosystems.

14.4.1 Water discharge guidelines and standards

The university's supplied sustainability materials describe institutional measures intended to protect water systems from contamination.

These include water-quality inspections, filtration measures, wastewater disposal guidance, stormwater drainage arrangements and waste-segregation practices.

Such measures are relevant to reducing the potential movement of pollutants from campus facilities into surrounding environments.

For formal reporting, the university should substantiate these arrangements through approved operating procedures, inspection records, drainage-system documentation and water-quality test results.

The practical water-sampling activities undertaken at Buxoro Baliq LLC in October 2025 provide a separately documented example of university-led education in water-quality assessment, although they do not establish compliance with campus wastewater discharge standards.

14.4.2 Action plan to reduce plastic waste

Bukhara State University encourages responsible waste management through environmental activities and student-led innovation.

The “Clean Territory” (“Toza Hudud”) campaign involved biotechnology students and eco-volunteers in campus cleaning and environmental improvement activities. The initiative promoted collective responsibility, ecological awareness and the maintenance of cleaner university surroundings.

Student entrepreneurship also provides opportunities to develop solutions for waste reduction and material recovery.

At the university stage of the Hult Prize international startup competition, 13 student teams presented social entrepreneurship projects.

The first-place project, “Recarbon”, proposed converting discarded tyres and wooden furniture into activated carbon sorbents. The second-place project, “ZDZ”, focused on creating value-added products from used clothing.

These proposals demonstrate student interest in circular economy approaches, material reuse and the reduction of waste.

Bukhara State University Rector O. Khamidov also met Dr. Sivapalan Kathrivale of Tadweer Group in the United Arab Emirates to discuss possible scientific cooperation associated with a major waste-to-energy investment project in Bukhara Region.

The proposed facility was described as having a planned waste-processing capacity of 1,500 tonnes per day and an estimated investment value of USD 200 million.

The discussions resulted in a preliminary understanding regarding potential involvement of university researchers in scientific activities associated with the project.

This represents an opportunity for research cooperation in waste-management technologies, although the project is not evidence of an operational university recycling facility or a completed plastic-reduction programme.

14.4.3 Reducing Marine Pollution (Policy)

Bukhara State University has adopted an institutional Environmental Protection and Waste Management Policy, which includes a section specifically dedicated to preventing and reducing pollution of aquatic and marine ecosystems, particularly from land-based sources such as plastic waste, chemical runoff, and wastewater.

The policy aligns with UN SDG 14.1 – Prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution and forms part of the university’s Green Campus and Environmental Sustainability Strategy (2021–2025).

14.5.1 Minimising Alteration of Aquatic Ecosystems (Plan)

Supporting the Protection of Freshwater Habitats

The university's academic activities promote understanding of aquatic habitats and the environmental conditions necessary to sustain fish populations.

Through ichthyological research, field observations and aquaculture-related education, students investigate the relationships between water quality, aquatic organisms and ecosystem functioning.

The October 2025 training at Buxoro Baliq LLC demonstrated how environmental measurements can be incorporated into practical aquaculture education.

The supplied materials also describe an Action Plan for Aquatic Ecosystem Protection, reportedly approved in May 2024.

To establish this as an implemented institutional plan, the university should provide the approved document, its geographic scope, defined conservation measures, responsible units and implementation records.

14.5.2 Monitoring the health of aquatic ecosystems

One of Bukhara State University's strongest examples of practical aquatic ecosystem education in 2025 was the field training conducted at Buxoro Baliq LLC on October 31.

Under the guidance of lecturer L.F. Karimova, students investigated aquaculture ponds and conducted observations relating to their hydrobiological characteristics.

Water samples were collected to assess environmental conditions, including water temperature, air temperature, pH and nutrient composition.

These parameters are relevant to understanding the conditions affecting fish health, water quality and the ecological functioning of managed aquatic environments.

The training connected theoretical ichthyological knowledge with practical sampling and environmental assessment methods.

Importantly, the university and the enterprise agreed to pursue seasonal monitoring, creating a foundation for future comparative observations of aquatic conditions.

The university's 2025 discussions concerning Japanese cooperation on soil- and water-analysis equipment represent an additional opportunity to develop technical monitoring capacity.

Together, these activities demonstrate existing field-based educational practice and a potential pathway towards more systematic aquatic ecosystem assessment.
