The Department of Uzbek Language and Literature was founded in 1933. The department was headed by prof. M.Solihov, prof. V.Abdullayev, prof. S.Aliyev, prof. R.J.Vohidov, prof. O.Safarov, Ph.D., N.Afokova, Ph.D., I.M. Ganiyev, prof. Sh.N.Ahmedova, prof. H.P.Eshonkulov, who made a worthy contribution to increasing its scientific and pedagogical potential and strengthening its material and technical base. Currently, the department is headed by prof. D.Z. Rajabov.
The department has a research center "Language, Literature and Folklore". Members of the department provide educational and methodological assistance to vocational colleges. In order to increase the efficiency of scientific and educational work, cooperation agreements have been concluded with the following scientific organizations and educational institutions: Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germany, University of Zurich in Switzerland, Hacettepe University in Turkey, Omir Halisdemir University in Nigde, M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State Federal University in the Russian Federation, South Ural Federal University, Kazan Federal University, M.V. Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Alma-Ata Khotin Girls Pedagogical University, Baku State University in Azerbaijan, Baku Eurasian University, Turkic-Kyrgyz Manas University in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan Pedagogical Institute, as well as UzMU, SamDU, QarDU, UrDU, NavDU, FarDU, ADU, UzZHAKU, SamCHTI and Bukhara City IIB Academic Lyceum, Vobkent District Vocational Polytechnic No. 2 of Bukhara Region, These include the Presidential School in Bukhara and School No. 38 in Bukhara.

60230300 – Bachelors are prepared in the direction of textual studies and literary source studies (Uzbek language). Students are currently studying in this direction.
70230104 – Master's degrees are prepared in the direction of literary studies (Uzbek literature). Students are currently studying in this direction.
70230301 – Master's degree in Textual Studies and Literary Source Studies (Uzbek language) is being prepared. Students are currently studying in this field.
Research activities of the department
The department mainly conducts research in the areas of textual studies, source studies, folklore studies, and literature teaching methods. Over the past 5 years, members of the department have published more than 237 scientific articles in international and national scientific journals. More than 20 talented students are involved in research work at the department. Over the past 2 years, more than 15 scientific articles by students have been published in scientific collections.
