Shermatov Azam (1925.1.3, Kasan district - 1993.25.2, Tashkent) is a linguist. Honored Scientist of Uzbekistan (1986), Ph.D. doctor of sciences (1978), professor (1982). He graduated from the Bukhara Pedagogical Institute, Faculty of Uzbek Language and Literature (1951). He was a teacher (1951-53) and deputy director (1953-57). Toshkent ped. Lecturer and Associate Professor at the Department of Uzbek Linguistics (1960-62), historian. Dean of the Faculty of Philology (1962–67), Head of the Department of Uzbek Language in Russian Groups (1967–73), Dean of the Faculty of Uzbek and Kazakh Philology (1976–80), Head of the Department of General Linguistics (since 1973). He has created a number of textbooks and programs for students of Uzbek dialectology and general linguistics. His main research interests are the study of Uzbek dialects in Kashkadarya region.
