       The faculty of Philology carries out its activity in accordance with the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On Education", "National Program of Personnel Training" and President's Decree "Strengthening of material and technical basis of higher education institutions and cardinal improvement of quality of training of highly qualified specialists" On measures for further development of the higher education system "and" On measures for further development of the higher education system ". The activity of the faculty is aimed at the preparation of highly qualified specialists required for higher education, vocational and secondary special education, general education institutions and social spheres

In 1930 the department of the Uzbek language and literature was created at the faculty of social sciences.Until 1945, Abdurauf Fitrat, Miyanbuzruk Solihov, Bakir Choponzoda, Kayum Karimov, Vohid Abdullayev, Murod Sharofiddinov, Ma'rifat Kazijonov and Pardaev taught in the department.In 1945, on the basis of this department, three independent departments were formed and the department of Uzbek Literature started functioning independently. In  1945-1953, 1957-1963, 1977-1988 Doctor of philological sciences, professor S.A. Aliyev, in 1963-1965 docent T. Hamid , in 1954-1957 docent A.Abdullayev, in 1960-1965 docent O.Rasulova,  in 1967-1972 docent T.Karaev,  in 1972-1977 docent R.Vahidov, and  in 1988-1992 professor O.Safarov headed the department. In 1992, on the basis of the Uzbek Literature Department Folklore and New Uzbek Literature, Tasavvuf and Uzbek Classic Literature Chairs were organized.

The department was headed by prof. Mirzayev (1937-1977), later prof. E. Kilichev (1977-1982), then professor N. Nematov (1982-2004). In 2010-2011 academic year the Uzbek literature and the Uzbek linguistics departments were united and became the department  Uzbek philology. On January 11, 2017 the department Uzbek philology began to function separately as Uzbek Literature and Uzbek linguistics.The department annually prepares many qualified specialists, who are currently working in the fields of higher education, special education, journalism, tele-journalism and publishing.
